Yesterday, the Homemakers and Licensed Nurse Aides of A.V. Home Care Services assisted 80 people in their homes. Some of those people were bathed and others were given cues to help themselves bathe, and take their medications on time. Others had their houses cleaned, their laundry done, prescriptions picked up at the pharmacy, groceries bought and unpacked in the cupboard. Some were beneficiaries of a home cooked meal and the comfort that comes from knowing someone is busy in their kitchens.
A lot of the 80 people A.V. Home Care staff took care of yesterday have bodies that don't work so well anymore. They are old or sick or debilitated for one reason or another, but have memories of vigor and strength and the ability to manage on their own quite well, thank you. They still want that.
Others have minds that have gotten foggy and forgetful about what used to be so clear. They need guidance sometimes, organization to keep them straight, tasks to be done that aren't so easy anymore. Some are young with disabilities. Others are dying in their beds, whose families need us because they are consumed with the demands of caring for their own, let alone finding the energy to clean up around the house.
Yesterday, lives continued on with some measure of routine because of the support that the Homemakers and Health Aides of A.V. Home Care Services gave. It wasn't just the beneficiaries of our services who rested easier because of our work, but it was also their loved ones.
For those family members who live far away, and even those who live near-by and have busy schedules, jobs, children to fill their days, it is a relief and a tremendous help to know that we are there, working, watching, and addressing what needs attention with their loved one.
Today, a new day, we start all over. There will be different clients today, a few that we saw yesterday, and others not on the schedule again for a few days. Regardless, we will go out again to give our people what they need and what they count on. It is what we do, after all everyday. Ultimately, what we give to our clients is hope that there are more days to come, in comfort, at home.
